Jewellery design is the art or profession of designing and creating jewellery. Art has taken many forms throughout the centuries, from the simple beadwork of ancient times to the sophisticated metalworking and gem cutting that is known in the modern day. Jewellery designers work with precious metals, diamonds, beads and gemstones to create wearable pieces of art. A jewellery designer may create one- of-a-kind pieces for high-end jewellers or an entire line for a mass-market fashion designer. The curriculum seeks to enhance students’ design abilities, including their capacity to produce original ideas that meet customers’ wants and preferences. The course of study strongly emphasises developing students’ technical abilities, including their capacity to work with materials and tools to make jewellery, such as cutting, polishing, and soldering.
